• Scott County was formed by an act of the general assembly on November 24, 1814 and was named for General Winfield Scott.
Along the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail, north of Big Moccasin Gap (the exact location is uncertain), near what is now Gate City, Va., stood a welcome way-station for weary travelers. On August 26, 1791 “Captain Benge”, the feared Cherokee Brave, swept down upon the family of Elisha Farris, killing everyone except Nancy Farris (a child), who he took back to his camp at Running Waters.
